What is a servo drive and servo motor?

A servo drive is an electronic amplifier used to power electric servomechanisms. It monitors the feedback signal from the servomechanism and continually adjusts for deviation from expected behaviour.

A servo motor is a rotary actuator or linear actuator that allows for precise control of angular or linear position, velocity and acceleration. It consists of a suitable motor coupled to a sensor for position feedback. A servo motor is typically used in robotics, conveyor be...

OMRON’s servomotors, and linear servo drives

OMRON offers a wide range of servo motors and drives for different applications, depending on what you need from your servo system.

Our 1S series servo system motors optimise the full machine manufacturing cycle, from design to installation to commissioning. They help maximise machine production and shorten maintenance time. The 1S servo offers a high-resolution multi-turn encoder without battery backup, an innovative new TDF control loop and a built-in safety network for high performance and accuracy.

1SA series servo motors are designed to help manufacturing industries that are faced with growing demand for productivity improvement, while still needing to protect both people and machines. As processors become faster and communications technology becomes more sophisticated, automation with integrated safety has evolved in the pursuit of higher quality and performance. While productivity during operation has been improved, suspension of production lines is still inevitable.

Emergency stops and maintenance help ensure the safety of operators, but represents a challenge in further improving productivity. 1SA series servo motors helps manufacturers perform maintenance without stopping the machine, avoiding interference of machine and product by keeping control during unexpected shutdown and enabling zero-loss production thanks to its synchronised emergency stop feature.

Accurax G5 servo motors include IP67 protection and connectors on the motor body, plus 10-pole motors and a 20-bit encoder for a 40% reduction in motor cogging. These servomotors are 25% lighter and 15% smaller due to patented new stator design PAC-Clamp, 40% iron loss reduction and a 15% smaller encoder.

This series has sizes ranging from 50W to 15 kW and is rated to speeds of 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 rpm (with peak torque 300% of continuous torque for three seconds or more depending on the model). It has low speed and torque ripple due to low torque cogging, and best of all, these motors are extremely easy to use - no motor settings required, just plug and run.

OMRON’s Accurax G5 analogue/pulse series of servo drives is supplied with an integrated positioner, which you can use via a drive programming environment. It’s ideal for simple positioning applications like assembly machines, sorting and pick and place projects. The drive programming functionality is included in the standard CX Drive configuration tool.
